“A detective mystery that instantly abandons its own plot to deliver a deeply melancholic podcast essay about grief.” »

Smelled like a thriller, tasted like a daytime soap.

We open with a private investigator, a profession famously known for solving crimes by drinking tea and listening to grandmas summarize their son's bizarre coping mechanisms. The entire detective framing is an uncooked garnish, completely abandoned the second our narrator launches into her true passion: delivering a deeply melancholic podcast essay about grief.

I actually admire the audacity of turning a man's shattered life into a literal listicle of giggles. Though speaking of lists, someone must audit this investigator's apartment, which appears exclusively sourced from a decade-old Pinterest board dedicated to potted cacti and generic ceramics. But back to the tragedy. The backstory is so heavily over-seasoned with misery it becomes comical. He loses his daughter, his wife five years later, abandons his art, and records chuckles on a vintage Revox B77 tape recorder. *(Yes, the camera lingers on the VU meters. Yes, we are supposed to feel profound sadness.)*

The visual execution is a tossed salad of random home videos featuring everything from an orange moped to a toddler in a pink snowsuit. It is wonderfully earnest. But then we reach the grand finale of this emotional tasting menu, perfectly illustrated by a girl with a crown tattoo aggressively smoking a cigarette in the dark, and the whole dish is flambéed into ash.

Cremated at minute four.
